The competitiveness of the Australian wine sector is driven by the many winemaking businesses and wine exporters. This section includes a number of reports that provide winemaking businesses with information on business conditions, performance benchmarks and overall production and sales figures and benchmarks to support decision-making.

Overview

There are over 2000 wine businesses in Australia, producing over 1 billion litres of wine annually. Two-thirds of wine sales are exports. The direct-to-consumer channel is a small but high value and strongly growing sales channel especially for small winemakers.

Reports on wine production and wine sales

The Wine Production, Sales and Inventory report provides details of total wine production in the latest 12-month period for red and white grapes, sales of Australian wine in domestic and export markets and estimated current stock levels. Figures are reported for the past 12 years.

The Cellar Door and Direct-to-consumer report gives the results of the annual survey into direct-to-consumer wine sales and provides benchmarks for cellar door operations, wine club membership, sales by channel/category and year-on-year growth.

The monthly Bulk Wine Update gives a summary of the international prices paid for bulk wine from Australia, compared with competitor countries and over time. These figures are compiled from the Ciatti Global Market reports.

The Small Winemaker Production and Sales report is based on the results of a survey conducted in 2017 of Australia's 2000+ small winemakers - ie those with an estimated crush of up to 500 tonnes. It provides insights into business structure as well as reporting annual production, revenue by sales channel and revenue growth.
